Pride of Herefordshire Awards 2009
2008 Winner - Elizabeth Francis
The Pride of Herefordshire Awards are designed to celebrate the very best of what goes on in our area. The awards, a joint venture between the Hereford Journal and The Herefordshire Partnership, are designed to highlight the achievements of the many people who are unsung heroes, or who work quietly behind the scenes but make a real difference to the success and wellbeing of Herefordshire.
Judging will be led by the Herefordshire Partnership and a panel of judges - and as well as deciding on the category winners they will make the decision for the overall Pride of Herefordshire winner. Each category winner will not only receive a prestigious trophy but also a cheque for £100.00.
Now the process begins. Each nomination we receive will be submitted to a panel of judges who will select finalists for each award. Following this, they will appear in a supplement in The Hereford Journal and invitations will go out for a celebratory evening held on 21st October 2009, where winners will be announced and presented with their awards.
Colin Spicer, managing director of parent group, Shropshire Newspapers, said the Hereford Journal was proud to be involved. ‘The Pride of Herefordshire awards stand for everything which is good about Herefordshire,’ he said. ‘They celebrate and appreciate the unsung heroes, generous volunteers, and friendly characters who go that extra mile to make a difference in their local community, without the thought of personal reward. The time has come to give them the recognition they so richly deserve, yet rarely crave.
‘All too often, it seems, the news headlines are dominated by bad news. Yet daily, in Herefordshire’s towns, villages and rural hamlets, people are overcoming obstacles on the road to success, refusing to take ‘no’ for an answer, and making their communities safer, richer, and happier places by their selfless actions.
‘The Hereford Journal is a community-driven newspaper. Our community is our readership. And among our readership we know there are hundreds of heartwarming stories which deserve to be told.’ He added: ‘We are proud of Herefordshire, and proud to be the sponsor of these Pride of Herefordshire Awards, which we hope will highlight how the beautiful county of Herefordshire brings out the best in its people, setting an example which other parts of the country could follow.
